US mulling sanctions, deeper Pentagon involvement to protect Christians in Nigeria

The United States is weighing a combination of targeted sanctions and expanded Pentagon engagement as part of a broader strategy to address persistent attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria.

According to senior US officials, Washington is reviewing:

Targeted sanctions on individuals or groups linked to sectarian violence.

Enhanced military coordination with Nigeria through the Pentagon, focusing on intelligence-sharing and protection of vulnerable communities.

Stronger diplomatic pressure on Abuja to improve early-warning systems and rapid response mechanisms.

US officials say the move follows repeated deadly assaults on Christian villages, especially in the Middle Belt. The strategy is still under review, and final decisions may depend on Nigeria’s cooperation and compliance with human-rights standards.
